Yoga Nidra That Restores You in 20 Minutes
Non-Sleep Deep Rest — guided by AI that adapts to your exhaustion level. The deepest restoration you can get without actually sleeping. Personalized to what your nervous system needs right now.
You're exhausted but can't sleep. Or you slept 8 hours and still feel depleted. Traditional meditation asks you to focus — but you don't have the cognitive resources to focus on anything. You need something that works precisely because you don't have to try.
Yoga nidra is the practice of doing nothing, systematically. You lie down, follow simple guidance, and let your nervous system downshift into a state between waking and sleeping. No effort. No concentration. No failing at it.
Andrew Huberman calls it NSDR — Non-Sleep Deep Rest. Research shows 20 minutes of yoga nidra produces restoration comparable to hours of sleep. But the generic recordings don't adapt to whether you need daytime energy restoration or nighttime sleep preparation. Your nervous system doesn't need the same thing at 2pm and 2am.
Deep Rest for Daytime, Sleep Prep for Night
StillMind's yoga nidra has three distinct modes. Daytime deep rest restores energy without grogginess — you emerge refreshed, not sleepy. Sleep preparation guides your nervous system through progressive relaxation into natural sleep. General yoga nidra gives you the full practice — body rotation, breath awareness, visualization — adapted to your experience level. The AI selects the mode based on time of day and what you describe.
Effort-Free Practice for Depleted Days
Most meditation techniques require some effort — sustained attention, returning to the breath, watching thoughts. Yoga nidra asks the opposite: let go of all effort. The guidance does the work. This makes it ideal for burnout, chronic fatigue, post-illness recovery, and anyone who's too exhausted to meditate but needs restoration. If you can lie down and listen, you can do yoga nidra.
From Ancient Practice to Neuroscience
Yoga nidra has been practiced for centuries, but modern neuroscience explains why it works. The practice shifts brainwaves from beta (active thinking) through alpha (relaxed awareness) into theta (the edge of sleep) — the same state that normally only occurs in the transition to sleep. Research shows this theta state accelerates learning consolidation, reduces cortisol, and restores cognitive function. StillMind's AI-guided sessions give you this evidence-based practice, personalized.
How Yoga Nidra Works in StillMind
Choose Your Rest Type
Open StillMind and tell the AI what you need. 'I'm exhausted and it's 2pm' gets daytime deep rest. 'Can't sleep' gets sleep preparation. Or just say 'yoga nidra' for the full traditional practice.
Get a Personalized Session
The AI creates a yoga nidra session matched to your energy level, time of day, and available time. 10-minute quick rest, 20-minute standard, or 30+ minute deep practice. Each includes body rotation, breath awareness, and visualization stages.
Lie Down and Let Go
No sitting required. No focus required. Just lie down in a comfortable position and follow the guidance. If you drift off during daytime practice, the voice gently brings you back. If you drift off during sleep practice, that's the point.
Notice the Difference
Quick <a href='/voice-journal/'>voice note</a> when you emerge. How do you feel compared to before? What came up? Tracking your yoga nidra sessions helps you see patterns in when you need restoration most.
Yoga nidra & NSDR questions
What is yoga nidra and how is it different from meditation?
Yoga nidra means "yogic sleep." You lie down, require no effort, and are guided through systematic relaxation stages — body rotation, breath awareness, visualization. Traditional meditation typically involves seated attention training where you actively focus on something (breath, mantra, sensations).
Yoga nidra works precisely because you're not trying. There's no focus to maintain, no wandering mind to correct. You follow simple guidance and let your nervous system do the rest.
What is NSDR and is it the same as yoga nidra?
NSDR (Non-Sleep Deep Rest) is a term popularized by neuroscientist Andrew Huberman. It's essentially modern yoga nidra with some specific breath protocols added. The core mechanism is the same — systematic relaxation in the hypnagogic state between waking and sleeping.
Huberman rebranded it to make the practice more accessible to people skeptical of traditional yogic terminology. StillMind offers both traditional yoga nidra and NSDR-style protocols.
Can yoga nidra replace sleep?
Not entirely, but research shows it produces measurable restoration. 20 minutes of yoga nidra has been shown to reduce sleep debt markers and restore cognitive function. It's not a replacement for chronic sleep deprivation, but it's remarkably effective for daytime recovery.
Think of it as a powerful complement to sleep, not a substitute. If you're struggling with sleep itself, see our sleep meditation page for sleep-specific help.
How long should a yoga nidra session be?
Traditional practice is 30-45 minutes. But research shows 10-20 minute sessions still produce measurable relaxation response. For beginners, 15-20 minutes is ideal — long enough to reach the theta brainwave state, short enough to stay engaged.
For daytime energy recovery, even 10 minutes helps. StillMind adapts session length to your available time and experience level.
I keep falling asleep during yoga nidra — is that ok?
If you're doing sleep preparation nidra: great, falling asleep is the goal. If you're doing daytime restoration: slightly less optimal because you miss the theta-state awareness phase where the deepest restoration occurs, but it's still restorative.
Tips for staying in the sweet spot: keep the room slightly cooler, use a slight incline instead of lying flat, or try seated nidra. With practice, you'll learn to hover in that edge state between waking and sleeping.
Can beginners do yoga nidra?
Yes — yoga nidra is arguably the most beginner-friendly meditation practice that exists. No experience needed. No postures to learn. No concentration skills required. You literally just lie down and follow guidance. There's no way to do it wrong.
This is precisely why StillMind recommends it for people who have struggled with traditional seated meditation. If you can lie down and listen, you can do yoga nidra.
When is the best time to practice yoga nidra?
It depends on your goal. Mid-afternoon (1-3pm) is ideal for daytime restoration — it coincides with the natural circadian dip when your body is primed for rest. 30 minutes before bed works well for sleep preparation. After stressful events for nervous system recovery.
The one time to avoid is right after waking — you're already in a similar brainwave state and won't get the same benefit from the transition.

I honestly love this app. It feels so wholesome and easy to use. The design is simple but really modern, and the dark mode makes it extra relaxing. The onboarding felt super personal and different from other apps, and I'm obsessed with the little details like the gentle vibrations and the closing bell at the end of a session. Being able to customize meditations is great, but I also like that there are quick defaults when I just want to jump right in. The mood tracking and daily progress idea is such a cool touch too. It kind of feels like closing your Apple Fitness rings, but in a mindful way. Plus, I think it's awesome that you can invite friends and share the journey. Overall, it just feels calming, intuitive, and really supportive. Definitely one of the best meditation apps I've tried.
This app actually got me to meditate! And like it!

I have never really had the habit of meditating but this app is so simple and intuitive that it is perfect for my chaotic mind. I love that you can adjust the session length and pick a meditation session type… for example I love using the Affirmations just so I can meditate, focus and ground myself in an affirmation and intention for the day. The journal entry right afterwards is so perfect for you to jot your thoughts down after a session… I love the font, the font size, I love the tracker to show your progress! This app is actually worth it. I actually look forward to my mornings now for my personal 2-5min moment with myself. There are features I haven't even explored but so far it's a 10/10 for me (and I'm usually very critical of apps!).
Groundbreaking voice recording feature

The personalisation of these meditations is amazing. Most meditations I've done in the past have been generic and my mind stays to wander, but I can use these guided meditations to keep bringing me back to the core reason why I'm doing it and not getting lost in my own thoughts.
