Body Scan Meditation That Knows Where You Hold Tension
Progressive awareness guided by AI that adapts to your body. Release tension in your shoulders, jaw, or wherever stress lives — with a practice built for your specific patterns.
You've tried body scan meditation before. Lie down, start at your feet, notice sensations, work your way up. Simple enough in theory. But when the guide says 'notice any tension in your shoulders' and you can't feel anything — or you feel everything and it's overwhelming — the generic script just keeps going.
Your body scan shouldn't be the same whether you're trying to fall asleep, releasing a day of desk tension, or managing chronic pain. A 3am insomnia body scan needs a different pace, different focus, and different voice than a post-workout relaxation scan.
Body scan meditation works. The research from MBSR programs proves it. But the technique needs to match what your body is actually experiencing — not a one-size-fits-all recording that treats every body the same.
Three Ways to Scan — Matched to Your Moment
Sleep body scan slows your nervous system down, moving from toes to head with extended pauses. Tension release body scan targets where you actually hold stress — jaw, shoulders, lower back — with active release cues. General body scan builds progressive awareness from head to toe, training the mind-body connection. The AI selects the variant based on what you tell it.
Guided by Your Body, Not a Timer
Generic body scans allocate equal time to every body part. But you don't hold equal tension everywhere. StillMind's AI-generated scripts spend more time where you need it — extra guidance for chronic tension areas, lighter passes through areas that feel neutral. If you tell it your shoulders are locked from desk work, the scan lingers there with specific release techniques.
From MBSR Research to Your Earbuds
Body scan meditation comes from Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction — Jon Kabat-Zinn's program that put meditation into hospitals. The technique has decades of clinical evidence for pain management, sleep improvement, and stress reduction. StillMind brings that evidence-based practice to your phone, personalized by AI so you get MBSR-quality body scans without the 8-week course commitment.
How Body Scan Meditation Works in StillMind
Tell the AI What You Need
Open StillMind and describe how your body feels. 'My shoulders are killing me from work' or 'I need to wind down for sleep' or just 'body scan' — as specific or simple as you want.
Get a Matched Body Scan
The AI creates a body scan matched to your situation. Sleep scans use slow pacing and progressive relaxation. Tension scans target specific areas. Pain scans use gentle, non-intrusive awareness. You choose the length.
Follow the Guided Awareness
Lie down or sit comfortably. The AI voice guides you through progressive body awareness — noticing sensations without judgment, releasing where you can, accepting where you can't.
Track What You Notice
Quick <a href='/voice-journal/'>voice note</a> after your scan. Where did tension surprise you? What released? Over time, you build a map of your body's patterns — insights that inform better scans each time.
Body scan meditation questions
What is body scan meditation and how is it different from regular meditation?
Body scan meditation is a progressive awareness technique where you systematically move your attention through different parts of your body, noticing sensations without trying to change them. It comes from Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), the program Jon Kabat-Zinn developed at UMass Medical Center.
Unlike breath-focused meditation where you anchor attention on one point, body scan moves your awareness methodically — typically head to toe or toe to head — spending time with each body region. It's less about clearing your mind and more about tuning into what your body is actually experiencing. This makes it particularly effective for people who struggle with traditional sitting meditation because there's always a clear "next step" to follow.
How long should a body scan meditation take?
Anywhere from 5 to 45 minutes, depending on what you need. Quick scans (5 to 10 minutes) work well as tension check-ins — a fast sweep through your body to notice where you're holding stress. These are great for mid-day resets or before a meeting.
Full MBSR-style body scans run 30 to 45 minutes and give you time to really settle into each body region, noticing subtler sensations. These are best for dedicated practice sessions or before sleep. StillMind adapts the length to your available time — if you say you have 10 minutes, you get a focused scan that covers the essentials.
Can body scan meditation help with chronic pain?
Yes — this is actually one of the strongest evidence-based applications. Body scan meditation originated in Jon Kabat-Zinn's chronic pain clinic at UMass Medical Center. The technique doesn't eliminate pain, but it changes your relationship to it.
When you bring gentle, non-judgmental awareness to areas of pain, you start to separate the raw physical sensation from the emotional suffering layered on top — the fear, frustration, and resistance that amplify pain. Research from MBSR programs shows that chronic pain patients who practice body scans regularly report reduced pain intensity and, more significantly, reduced pain-related suffering.
What if I fall asleep during a body scan?
If you're doing the body scan for sleep, that's literally the goal — congratulations. Sleep body scans are designed with progressive relaxation pacing that naturally guides your nervous system toward rest.
If you're doing the body scan for awareness training and keep falling asleep, a few adjustments help: try sitting up instead of lying down, practice earlier in the day when you're more alert, or choose a shorter scan so you finish before drowsiness takes over. The AI in StillMind adjusts pacing based on your intent — sleep scans are slower with longer pauses, while awareness scans maintain enough engagement to keep you present.
Is body scan meditation the same as progressive muscle relaxation?
Related but different. Progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) involves actively tensing each muscle group for 5 to 10 seconds, then releasing — creating relaxation through the contrast between tension and release. Body scan meditation is passive awareness. You notice sensations in each body part without physically engaging or changing anything.
Both reduce tension, but through different mechanisms. PMR works at the muscular level — physically releasing contracted muscles. Body scan works at the nervous system level — training your brain to notice tension patterns and naturally soften its response. Some people find PMR easier to start with because there's a clear physical action. Body scan requires more attention skill but often produces deeper results over time.
Can I do a body scan while sitting at my desk?
Absolutely. You don't need to lie down for a body scan to work. A 5-minute seated body scan can check in with the areas that accumulate desk tension — jaw (are you clenching?), shoulders (are they up by your ears?), hands (are you gripping the mouse?), lower back (are you slumping?).
You can do this with your eyes open if you need to look like you're just sitting at your desk thinking. StillMind has short scan options specifically designed for this — quick check-ins that don't require changing position or finding a quiet room.
What should I do if a body scan makes me more aware of discomfort?
This is normal and actually the point. Awareness precedes release — you can't let go of tension you don't know you're holding. When a body scan reveals discomfort, that's information, not a problem. Your body was uncomfortable before the scan too; you just weren't noticing.
That said, if the awareness becomes overwhelming rather than informative, narrow your focus to one neutral or pleasant body part — your hands, the soles of your feet, anywhere that feels relatively comfortable. Use that as an anchor until the intensity settles. If body awareness consistently triggers anxiety, see our meditation for anxiety page for anxiety-specific support.

I honestly love this app. It feels so wholesome and easy to use. The design is simple but really modern, and the dark mode makes it extra relaxing. The onboarding felt super personal and different from other apps, and I'm obsessed with the little details like the gentle vibrations and the closing bell at the end of a session. Being able to customize meditations is great, but I also like that there are quick defaults when I just want to jump right in. The mood tracking and daily progress idea is such a cool touch too. It kind of feels like closing your Apple Fitness rings, but in a mindful way. Plus, I think it's awesome that you can invite friends and share the journey. Overall, it just feels calming, intuitive, and really supportive. Definitely one of the best meditation apps I've tried.
This app actually got me to meditate! And like it!

I have never really had the habit of meditating but this app is so simple and intuitive that it is perfect for my chaotic mind. I love that you can adjust the session length and pick a meditation session type… for example I love using the Affirmations just so I can meditate, focus and ground myself in an affirmation and intention for the day. The journal entry right afterwards is so perfect for you to jot your thoughts down after a session… I love the font, the font size, I love the tracker to show your progress! This app is actually worth it. I actually look forward to my mornings now for my personal 2-5min moment with myself. There are features I haven't even explored but so far it's a 10/10 for me (and I'm usually very critical of apps!).
Groundbreaking voice recording feature
